The Mechanism of Action
Western science explains how meditation works physically. Dr. K emphasizes the Default Mode Network (DMN), a brain network active when we are not focused on the outside world. It is the seat of the "Ego," rumination, and anxiety.
Teacher's Note
When students say "I can't stop thinking," explain that their DMN is overactive. Meditation is not "stopping thought," it is switching neural networks.
Key Concepts
- DMN (Default Mode Network): Self-referential processing, past/future thinking.
- TPN (Task Positive Network): Present-moment focus, "Flow" state.
- Mutual Inhibition: When TPN goes up, DMN goes down. You cannot be fully present and ruminating simultaneously.

The brain is wandering. The 'Self' is loud.
Ayurvedic Psychology: The "OS" of the Mind
While Neuroscience provides the hardware, Ayurveda describes the software. Dr. K applies the theory of Doshas (Bio-elements) to understand learning styles, emotional processing, and mental health tendencies.
Anatomy of the Self: Pancha Koshas
Yoga posits that we are not just a body, but 5 concentric layers (sheaths). Most mental health issues arise from a disconnect between these layers.
Diagnostic Tool
Click the layers on the right to explore where a student might be "stuck".
"The problem is rarely in the layer where the symptom appears."
1. Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)
HardwareThe Flesh & Bone. Influenced by diet, sleep, and asana.
Teacher Tip: If a student cannot sit still for meditation, do not force the mind. Exhaust the body first with intense Asana.
2. Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)
Power SupplyThe Breath & Vitality. Influenced by Pranayama (breathwork) and emotional arousal.
Teacher Tip: Anxiety is often an Energy body disruption. Use slow, rhythmic breathing (e.g., 4-7-8) to hack the nervous system.
3. Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)
ProcessorEmotion & Sensory Input. This is where 'Mental Noise' and the DMN live. It processes data but doesn't judge it wisely.
Teacher Tip: Use Mantra (sound) or Trataka (sight) to occupy this layer so the deeper self can emerge.
4. Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual Body)
DriverWisdom & Discrimination (Buddhi). The ability to step back and observe thoughts rather than *be* them.
Teacher Tip: This is cultivated through Swadhyaya (self-study) and journaling. Ask "Who is listening to the thought?"
5. Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Body)
CoreConnection & Peace. The state of non-dual awareness. Not 'happiness' as an emotion, but the absence of friction.
Teacher Tip: Cannot be forced. It is a side effect of aligning the other four layers.
